Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • LENGTH

    Submitted manuscripts must be no longer than 9,000 words (excluding references).

    Submitted book reviews must be between 1,000-1,500 words.

  • AT-A-GLANCE

    Manuscripts should include the following:

    • A maximum 150-word abstract
    • A list of 5-10 keywords
    • A list of 4-5 bulleted summary points, totaling 100-150 words that describes in plain English the importance of your work
    • Use of U.S. English, with careful review for grammatical and typographical errors
    • Use of Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date referencing format
    • Clear structure (suggested sections include: intro, background, methods, findings, conclusion) 
     Book reviews should include the following:
    • A list of 5-10 keywords
    • Use of U.S. English, with careful review for grammatical and typographical errors
    • Use of Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date referencing format
    • Clear structure (suggested sections include: intro, summary, contribution to the field, conclusion)

  • IMAGES AND DERIVATIVE MATERIALS

    It is the author’s obligation and responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright and/or other use restrictions prior to submitting materials to MSU Press for publication. Images must be submitted as supplementary, clearly-labeled files at time of submission.

    All images must be minimum 300 dpi at planned publication size. Citations, permissions, and captions are required upon submission for all images. We cannot publish such materials without an accompanying signed permissions letter.
     

  • READY FOR REVIEW

    In order to be considered ready for review, submitted manuscripts should be anonymous. The author's biography, ackowledgements, and personal identifying information should be uploaded in a separate Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file with the anonymous manuscript.
